Sullivan, Senators Support $750 Billion Defense Budget

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan, along with U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Roger Wicker (R-MS) sent a letter to the Senate Budget Committee today supporting the $750 billion defense request in President Trump’s Fiscal Year 2020 budget and advocating for the funding necessary to ensure the military is prepared to provide for the national security challenges it faces today and in the future.

Noting that “years of insufficient defense budgets have led to readiness problems across our Armed Forces,” the letter urges the Budget Committee to continue the positive progress Congress has made in the past 2 years toward rebuilding the military’s readiness.

“The bipartisan steps we have taken – increasing defense spending in 2018 and 2019 to $700 billion and $718 billion respectively – show our nation’s collective ability to recognize and respond to the threats we now face,” the senators wrote. “A sustained, robust defense budget continues to build on the bipartisan progress we have made to ensure our troops remain ready in the short-term, but still have the new technologies they will need to fight on the modern battlefield.”

The letter further observed that a $750 billion defense budget would represent the 3-5% real growth in the defense budget called for by the 2018 National Defense Strategy Commission Report to maintain the U.S. military’s qualitative edge against potential adversaries.
